Western Writers of America Bookseller Display Contest
In anticipation of Western Writers of America’s annual convention in June, Western Writers of America is challenging booksellers to create a window or shelf display that highlight western authors and western musicians and their work. The store and museum gift shop judged to have the best display will each win $500.
WWA was incorporated in 1953 to promote the literature of the American West. Like the Western landscape itself, WWA and the books, songs, and stories produced by its members have evolved immensely.
We are no longer just traditional Western fiction authors. WWA boasts historians, nonfiction authors, young adult, romance writers, songwriters, poets, and screenwriters for film and television.
Today we have more than 750 members who have garnered awards and made The New York Times best-sellers list. Members include C.J. Box, Anne Hillerman, Craig Johnson, Mark Hall-Patton, Thomas Cobb, Kat Martin, Kirk Ellis, Lucia St. Clair Robson, Paul Andrew Hutton, and David Morrell.
Western Writers of America annually honors writers for distinguished writing about the American West with the Spur Awards. Since 1953 the Spur Awards have been considered one of the most prestigious awards in American literature. Spurs are given for the best western historical novel, best western traditional novel, best western contemporary novel, best short story, best short nonfiction. Also, best contemporary nonfiction, best biography, best history, best juvenile fiction and nonfiction, best drama, best documentary, and best first novel as well as best first nonfiction book. Winners of the Spur Awards in previous years include Larry McMurtry for Lonesome Dove, Michael Blake for Dances With Wolves, Glendon Swarthout for The Shootist, and Tony Hillerman for Skinwalker.
To participate in the book display contest independent booksellers are asked to email a photo of their display featuring books about the Old West with the subject Western Writers of America Bookseller Display Contest. From photos submitted between April 4, 2019 and June 1, 2019 Western Writers of America will select five finalists based on the creativity, originality, and design of the display. Western Writers of America will announce the winning bookstore and museum gift shop on Friday, June 7, 2019 and again at the Spur Award banquet on June 22, 2019. We would like to invite the representatives of the winning bookstore to attend the Spur Award banquet.
